Weldcoa is offering in-person training in Specialty Gas Filling at Weldcoa's Innovation Center (aka the WIC). The WIC is a completely functioning cylinder gas filling facility with modern spec gas lab and analytical equipment for quality training and education. The programs focus on all aspects of specialty gas filling and testing, developing skill sets through both classroom and hands-on instruction. Participants in the programs can receive certification in Specialty Gas Mixing and Gas Chromatography.

This training service is provided by Weldcoa and AsteRisk. Both companies have worked closely together, supporting the compressed gas industry for decades.

SPECIALTY GAS GRAVIMETRIC MIXTURE FILLING TRAINING COURSES

(BASIC LEVEL)

This course is designed for specialty gas mixture personnel who need the basics of making Specialty Gas mixtures. Prior lab experience is helpful but not required. This is a 2 1/2-day lecture with hands-on lab exercises. Class is hosted by Weldcoa, taught by AsteRisk.

Topics include:

  • Mixture calculations: manual and automated methods
  • Cylinder selection: CGA connections, materials, test dates, etc.
  • Pre-fill inspection: DOT requirements, cylinder damage, safety considerations, etc.
  • Cylinder preparation: general and special requirements for certain gases
  • Safety precautions: OSHA, DOT and FDA issues
  • Partial pressure fill techniques: pressure/temperature, confirmation, and compressibility adjustments
  • Gravimetric fill techniques: mother mixes, base mixes, sample bombs/loops for PPM mixes
  • Post fill procedures
  • Mixture vs. analytical ranges
  • Analytical accuracy vs. precision
  • Scale calibration
  • Low PPM mixture techniques
  • Purity considerations for critical mixtures

What is not covered: This course does not cover fuel/oxidizer mixtures, toxic/corrosive mixtures or EPA protocol mixtures. Please contact Weldcoa for additional information and schedules for these advanced application.

(ADVANCED LEVEL)

This course is designed for specialty gas mixture personnel who are already comfortable making gravimetric mixtures and who need advanced training. Class is hosted by Weldcoa, taught by AsteRisk.

Topics include:

  • Advanced mixture strategies and case studies
  • Cylinder passivation
  • Optimizing base/pre-mixtures
  • Advanced gravimetric fill techniques (micro cylinders, loops, syringes)
  • Hydrocarbon blends
  • Liquid blends
  • Fuel/oxidizer mixtures
  • Other potentially reactive mixtures
  • Mixture stability

 

SPECIALTY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY TRAINING COURSES

(BASIC LEVEL)

This course is designed for personnel who need to use a gas chromatograph. Prior lab experience is helpful but not required. This is a 2 1/2-day lecture with hands-on lab exercises. Class is hosted by Weldcoa, taught by AsteRisk.

Topics include:

  • Why and how GCS work
  • GC components: gas systems, sample valves, columns, detectors, electronics, etc.
  • Column selection: when to use molecular sieve, poropak, CTR, hayesep, etc.
  • Integrators: operation, programming and maintenance
  • Detectors: thermal conductivity, discharge ionization, flame ionization
  • Difficult analyses: argon in oxygen, hydrogen in helium, low ppm, etc.
  • Carrier gas options and precautions: argon, hydrogen, etc.
  • Chromatogram interpretation
  • GC parameters and their effects: column temperature/flow, detector current/temperature, sample loop size/pressure
  • Analytical tips & techniques, such as:
    • Making in-house chromatographic grade helium for GCS
    • How to avoid costly detector replacement
    • Reliable limits of detection
    • Methods to minimize instrument downtime       
    • How to save over $500.00/year on each GC
(ADVANCED LEVEL)

This course is designed for personnel with a solid foundation in chromatography who need to obtain the maximum performance from their gas chromatograph. We focus hands on attention to ionization gas chromatographs. Nevertheless, many of the advanced principles can apply to other detectors (TCD, etc.). Class is hosted by Weldcoa, taught by AsteRisk.

Topics include:  

  • GC measurements and chemical property analysis
  • DID GC components
  • Advanced chromatography techniques: conditioning for PPB analyses, optimization of flow circuits, etc.
  • Advanced ionization detector theory and practice
  • Integrator/computer programming
  • Self-diagnostics, troubleshooting and adjustments
  • Difficult analyses: helium impurities (PPB), H2 impurities (PPB), trace N2 in argon, Ionization potentials
  • Automating chromatograms
  • Computer/GC interface and wiring
  • Installation and preventive maintenance
  • Ionization electrometer troubleshooting
  • Flow systems

Training is hosted at Weldcoa Innovation Center located in Aurora, IL. Address is 338 East Sullivan Road, Aurora IL 60505 (directly across the street from Weldcoa’s 335 East Sullivan Road, Aurora manufacturing facility)

HOTEL AND TRAVEL DETAILS

Attendees are responsible for their own transportation, meal and hotel costs. If you are flying in, it is recommended that you rent a vehicle to get around. Weldcoa does not provide any shuttle services to the hotels or the airport(s).

O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) are both about the same distance from our facility (approx. 35-40 miles). Travel time is about 40-90 minutes depending on the time of day and weather conditions.

Here are a couple hotel recommendations that are approximately 5-10 minutes from Weldcoa’s facility.
